I will be giving a talk at the Kinnelon Public Library, this Thursday, May 23 at 7 PM, which is the 4th of 9 such planned talks this year, roughly a month apart, on the subject of taking care of your computers, tablets, and phones, new or old, with special attention in Part 4 to:

• Backing up your device to the Cloud, to an Internet Backup Service for Free 
• What Cloud Backups Are Good For and What They Are Not 
• What is a Good Tablet to Buy Now and What It Will Cost -- Tablet Differences 
• What You Can Do with Your Tablet Instead of Your PC and What You Can't 
• How Can You Tell What Your Computer is Busy Doing and If It Is OK? 
• What Programs Is It Running? Is the Machine Itself OK? How to Tell 

Ask Your Questions about Your Computer and Computer Related Problems, such as:

1) Is my machine too old? When do I need a new machine?

2) How can I "pin" that program to my Taskbar, and what is a "Gadget?"

3) Why does my computer ... ?

4) If you have a laptop with a problem, bring it along and we'll take a quick look.

Kinnelon Library 50th Anniversary Kickoff Event on June 8, 2013

Happy 50th anniversary to the Kinnelon Public Library!

The library's 50th anniversary year-long celebration kickoff event takes place on Saturday evening, June 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Kinnelon Library.

I hope you'll come with your entire family!

This specific event represents a partnership with the Kinnelon Public School District to present a “Student Starlit Showcase” when students in grades 3 through 8 and their parents are invited to browse through and experience the writings of Kinnelon's students. It is masterminded by fellow Kinnelon Public Library Trustee (and amazing Pearl R. Miller English teacher) Aileen Florio!

Other highlights on the Kinnelon Library 50th anniversary kickoff event include:

• Brief student presentations about their experiences writing 
• High school students will lead presentations about new and popular apps and other engaging information technology
• DJ music provided by Al Louis Music - including the talented Mr. T (aka Alan Tedesco) from Stonybrook School!
• Light refreshments and coffee bar, and 
• Raffle prizes. 

From a practical perspective, if you don't yet have a library card, this is your opportunity to sign up for one!  If you haven't yet shared your email address with the Kinnelon Public Library - so you can receive a copy of the Library's newsletter - you'll be able to do so.

From a community perspective, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the kind of community magic we experienced when everyone in Kinnelon was hanging out at the Kinnelon Library after Hurricane Sandy.

You'll also have a chance to meet all of the Kinnelon Library Trustees: Anne Vosatka, Linda Farmer, Mike Odian, Bernadette Morrisroe, Aileen Florio and myself.

Craft Beer Dinner at The Smoke Rise Inn this Thursday May16, 2013, at 6:30 PM

As I write this, 4 days from now, I will be enjoying ales and lagers from one local craft brewer and a well know west coast brewer along with some fantastic food from our new SR Village Inn Chef, Greg Matty.

Chef Greg has carefully matched these lagers and ales to some very interesting food, and these combinations should enhance our appreciation of both the beers and the food. Look at that menu!
